Cartoonist / Illustrator
Henderson, Nevada
Bio:
I began my carrier as a professional artist on a whim. I basically taught myself how to turn my quirky drawing ability into a career as an artist. Cartooning seemed like a fun way to get people interested in looking at my work so I spent 2 years developing a comic strip I called Land of Nott. A name I got from a Tom Waits song. What Tom actually says in the song is "I took of to the Land of Nod," but I always heard Land of Nott. I added the "t" to make it seem more like a place. My local college University showed interest in publishing the cartoon so I turned land of Nott comics strip into Land of Nott College editorial cartoon. The cartoon caused a bit of commotion in the school. I received hate male from students who were unhappy with my commentary on some current event issues. I also received kudos from students who later said my cartoons were the only reason to read the paper. Either way my work was being read on a regular basis and I was getting input. Two of my editorial cartoons about sports issues even made it on my local Television News station. My work was noticed by a professor at the university, so he asked me to illustrate his book. Ten cartoons turned to 160 and so began my career. Since then I have been getting freelance jobs doing cartoons and illustrations for text books, local newspapers, greeting cards, logos for bands and businesses. I used some of my Illustration income to by a Macintosh. I then taught my self how to be a graphic artist and got a full time graphic job at my local paper. I handle my talent in a professional manner which I think is why people keep coming back for more. I have illustrated 5 books now with about that many waiting in the wings. All of my income now comes to me from my own creativity. I feel very fortunate to be able to say that.
