Medium: Wood, Pencil or Pen: Detailed figurative wood sculpture and carvings, influenced by the Medieval tradition
About The Art:
My work is influenced by the wood carvings done throughout the Medieval period, although my figures tend to be contemporary. I attempt to capture certain features of the human condition, disturbing or not. Moreover, to some degree, my figures are influenced by the time I spent traveling, drawing and writing in South East Asia (1988-89). During this time, I wrote "Marge and Grace," a poem that reflects my struggle through, and finally, my emergence from the postmodern condition. My figures are, indeed, "a submission to stillness."
A couple of years ago I completed a crucifix , which consists of three components and hangs on the wall. This piece has inspired me to construct more hanging sculptures, which are now complete. See "Figurehead" and "The Academic".
Natural flaws in the wood are expected, and in some cases encouraged. See for instance, "Woman in the Crowd," which is cracked throughout. I work in a variety of woods, including basswood, eucalyptus, limewood, pine, oak and cherry.
